184: How to deflect and redirect money conversations

Genecia Alluora: Hey, gorgeous, welcome to this episode. Now, we have been talking about a lot of other people in your life, like your friends, family and children. So I want to share with you today a really simple technique for deflecting unwanted money conversations. I call it the deflect and redirect. Yes, deflect and redirect.

Genecia Alluora: Now, this is a new forgive and tap. Now, you do not have to answer questions about money from anyone in your life if it triggers you or it makes you feel bad. Very important, okay? Deflect and Redirect is the art of redirecting conversations, your money conversations. And people will come to you and say, hey, how's the small business of yours going?

Genecia Alluora: And you can say things like, great auntie, have you tried this food?
[00:01:15]
Genecia Alluora: They ask you something, you deflect and you talk about food, if there's food on the table, right? Or have you eaten lunch? Or your mom could be like, how much do you make in your business this month? And you can say, oh, business is great. How did your vaccination go?

Genecia Alluora: How did your doctor appointment go? So it's like you say one thing and then you deflect and redirect, right? So it doesn't have to be a literal one. It doesn't have to have you reply, oh, Mom, I'm making X dollars this month. It doesn't have to do that, but it's definitely a great way to deflect.

Genecia Alluora: And another example could be your brother say, hey SIS, are you qualified to even teach people about business when you are an occupational therapist? And you go, ha ha, you so funny. Hey, how was your holiday?

Genecia Alluora: Your partner could be, how much did this cost you to sign up for this program? And you're like, oh, it's definitely worth every single cent. Would you like to have some cookies? So this is the art of deflecting and redirecting. It is the idea to give as little information as possible and then change the subject.

Genecia Alluora: So I want you to leave business and money talk for your mastermind buddies, your coach, your mentor, your financial team, people basically who have a part of your business game or who are in the same boat as you. You can always deflect and redirect with sports, with food, with holidays, with different destinations, with questions back to the nosy person. And also, it works if someone is trying to pick your brain. Like you can be, oh, no idea, so sorry, would you like to have some cookies? So what situations have you come up recently where others have asked you?

Genecia Alluora: Unsolicited the money business questions, go and brainstorm your redirect topics and response to change the subject, okay? So go and write down a list of ten ideas so you can have them in your pocket for the next awkward situation. It's totally up to you if you want to be honest or not, but sometimes when already you know your money blocks and it triggers you, and then you can tell people about that. And then when they have a certain response that you aren't expecting, you get triggered and you have to heal some more. So instead of that, this deflect and redirect conversations allow you to have that space so that you can heal enough.

Genecia Alluora: And by the time maybe when you are ready to have those conversations, then maybe you can share with them. Otherwise, just save these money conversations for the entrepreneur group, for the peers, and for your mentors and coaches. That will be best. Right? But most of the time it's really unhelpful, like I said, and triggering for you.

Genecia Alluora: And they are not qualified to have that conversation sometimes. And it's not their business and it's none of their business. And you can set boundaries on that. I mean, like, would you ask a brother or a random stranger how much you make? How much are you making?

Genecia Alluora: So why do people feel like they can do it to you when you start a business? So now go and have fun with this one. I really like this. Okay. Everything is good.

Genecia Alluora: Thanks. So how's your kids? I have deflect and redirect. So you can also go, well, how much do you make? You can ask them back the same question.

Genecia Alluora: Okay. So most of the time it works. It's a really fun way to redirect. And I really think that it's a very important skill to have to learn how to redirect conversations so that we are not triggered and save the important real conversations, money conversations, to people who understand what's going on.
